Every now and then, a switch flips and I start moving conversationally at a speed that not everyone in the room signed up for.
I call it Vince Vaughn-ing. (unofficially Coined)
Named after actor Vince Vaughn and the kind of rapid-fire rhythm we see in Wedding Crashers. His characters don’t just talk, they projectile vomit. Thoughts stack on thoughts, observations pile up and suddenly a full monologue lands that somehow feels both chaotic and perfectly logical.
It’s witty. It’s fast and in most cases, it’s a little overwhelming if you weren’t prepared for it.
That’s Vince Vaughn-ing. And I’ve realized I occasionally do it too.
Usually it starts with something small.
A question or a decision. A moment where people are trying to figure something out. Then my brain runs ahead. (Undiagnosed ADHD 🙌🏻)
Ten thoughts line up at once; context, outcomes, logistics, the ripple effect of every possible choice and before I realize it… the whole thing comes out in one continuous run of sentences.
Never rehearsed or planned. Just a fully formed idea sprinting out of me.
Sometimes it’s helpful. Sometimes it’s a lot lol.
Because Vince Vaughn-ing isn’t just talking fast. It’s thinking fast out loud.
-For example one night a group of friends and I were trying to decide whether we should go out to drink. Everyone’s had this moment whew someone suggests a bar. One friend shrugs. Another one says “maybe.” Nobody commits…The night’s stuck in that weird middle ground where it could go either way.
Then I Vince Vaughn-ed something like this:
“Ok so we go to the bar but If we go now it’s already late, we’ll get there just as it gets busy, someone’s gonna say they’re gonna talk to a girl but won’t actually talk to the girl, we get another round, still won’t talk to anybody, we’ll stand around looking at the room, complain about how expensive the drinks are, someone will suggest another bar, half of us won’t want to move and then suddenly it’s 1:30am and we’re wondering why we ever left our apartments in the first place.”
All of that in about fifteen seconds.
Silence.
Then someone laughs… and just like that, the decision was made. We stayed stayed in.
Sometimes Vince Vaughn-ing isn’t persuasion. It’s just seeing the whole scenario before it happens.
The trick with Vince Vaughn-ing isn’t stopping or holding it in. It’s knowing when the moment is ready for it.
Some conversations need space. Some moments need a quiet thought. But every once in a while the energy is right and the avalanche of ideas actually clarifies everything.
Those are the good moments. The ones where the unscripted monologue lands. The ones where the group suddenly gets it.
And in those moments, you can almost hear Vince’s line echoing from Swingers:
“You’re so money, baby, you don’t even know it.”
Shoutout to Vince Vaughn

If you wanna get the girl, you have to tell her that you’re a racecar driver or something
